Offering Childcare at City Meetings May Be Key to Diversifying Civic Engagement

Both Ithaca, New York, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are experimenting with policies to bring parents back into city politics.“The same people show up at all the meetings, and that can lead to mistakes in decision making,” Ithaca mayor Svante Myrick said. “That’s something that’s been haunting me. … The city looks different than the meeting room. [The city is] a lot younger and it’s less white. … We set out to see how we can get more people involved in local government, and this is one of the policies we’ve come up with.”
