I attended a very informative meeting this morning sponsored by the Kansas Hospital Association. The CEOs and executive staff of the University of Kansas Healthcare System, St. Luke’s Healthcare System, Providence Hospital, Advent Health and Children’s Mercy Hospital were in attendance to discuss their incredible range of services and how the Legislature can help to support overall healthcare in Kansas. Two issues were clear, the first being their overwhelming support for Medicaid expansion and the second, the need for legislation to address gun violence in Kansas. Gun violence which has a very expensive and negative effect on our healthcare system and our hospitals. In January I will be introducing two bills aimed at reducing gun violence. I will also continue my strong support for expanding Medicaid which will improve access to quality healthcare for 150,000 children and working Kansans. It will also return billions of our federal tax dollars back to Kansas. Federal dollars which will be directed toward expanding healthcare and stimulating the Kansas economy. I will keep you updated on these issues as we deal with them in Topeka.
