Washingtonville Police are pleased to announce the addition of “Jax” to the police force. Jax is a 13-month old male german shepherd that was born in Hungary and raised in Holland. Jax and K9 Handler Officer Joseph Mendez will start the 540-hour NYS DCJS K9 patrol training on Thursday and later this year will complete additional narcotic detection training. The training will consist of agility, on and off the leash obedience, police tracking for suspects, missing persons and articles, handler protection, criminal apprehension and searching vehicles and buildings for narcotics.

The department is extremely excited as this is the department’s first K9. I want to thank Mayor Joseph Bucco, Deputy-Mayor Paul Lang, Trustee Richard Calore, Trustee Valerie Laudato, Trustee Laurisa Sampson, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt Palen, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Police Department and all our community’s support.

Not only will Jax assist our patrol and investigative needs, he will be an ambassador of the police department. Jax will appear at special events, be available for demonstrations and will hopefully break down any barriers between the public and the police that sometimes exist.

We have had many people already asking to donate items like dog food, dog treats, bullet proof vest, etc. and we will put out additional information about what is needed in the future.
