Did you know…On this day, July 16th, 1969, 50 years ago, the Apollo 11 Rocket launched from the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida carrying three men on the first Lunar Landing mission.

Two of the three men, were West Point Graduates; Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. graduating third in the class of 1951 and Michael Collins class of 1952. Both chose to serve in the U.S. Air Force, an available option since the Air Force Academy did not yet exist. Collins’ father was a retired Army Major General who served in both World Wars and his uncle, GEN J. Lawton Collins, was a former Army Chief of Staff during the Korean War. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was a 1955 graduate of Purdue University and was a naval aviator.
