The earliest beacons were gas-powered and could be seen for 10 miles--depending on the Wyoming weather, of course. Eventually a rotating 24-inch beacon was powered by an electrical supply from an onsite gasoline generator with an extra in case of problems with the first. It rotated 6 times a minute and could be seen sometimes at a distance of 40 miles--if the weather was ideal.
